Compressible Fluid Dynamics and Shock Waves Book Review:

This book offers comprehensive coverage of compressible flow phenomena and their applications, and is intended for undergraduate/graduate students, practicing professionals, and researchers interested in the topic. Thanks to the clear explanations provided of a wide range of basic principles, the equations and formulas presented here can be understood with only a basic grasp of mathematics. The book particularly focuses on shock waves, offering a unique approach to the derivation of shock wave relations from conservation relations in fluids together with a contact surface, slip line or surface; in addition, the thrust of a rocket engine and that of an air-breathing engine are also formulated. Furthermore, the book covers important fundamentals of various aspects of physical fluid dynamics and engineering, including one-dimensional unsteady flows, and two-dimensional flows, in which oblique shock waves and Prandtl-Meyer expansion can be observed.

Courant and Friedrich's classical treatise was first published in 1948 and tThe basic research for it took place during World War II. However, many aspects make the book just as interesting as a text and a reference today. It treats the dynamics of compressible fluids in mathematical form, and attempts to present a systematic theory of nonlinear wave propagation, particularly in relation to gas dynamics. Written in the form of an advanced textbook, it should appeal to engineers, physicists and mathematicians alike.

Now in its second edition, this book continues to give readers a broad mathematical basis for modelling and understanding the wide range of wave phenomena encountered in modern applications. New and expanded material includes topics such as elastoplastic waves and waves in plasmas, as well as new exercises. Comprehensive collections of models are used to illustrate the underpinning mathematical methodologies, which include the basic ideas of the relevant partial differential equations, characteristics, ray theory, asymptotic analysis, dispersion, shock waves, and weak solutions. Although the main focus is on compressible fluid flow, the authors show how intimately gasdynamic waves are related to wave phenomena in many other areas of physical science. Special emphasis is placed on the development of physical intuition to supplement and reinforce analytical thinking. Each chapter includes a complete set of carefully prepared exercises, making this a suitable textbook for students in applied mathematics, engineering, and other physical sciences. Reviews of the first edition: 'This book ... is an introduction to the theory of linear and nonlinear waves in fluids, including the theory of shock waves. ... is extraordinarily accurate and free of misprints ... . I enjoyed reading this book. ... most attractive and enticing appearance, and I’m certain that many readers who browse through it will wish to buy a copy. The exercises ... are excellent. ... A beginner who worked through these exercises would not only enjoy himself or herself, but would rapidly acquire mastery of techniques used...in JFM and many other journals...' (C. J. Chapman, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Vol. 521, 2004) 'The book targets a readership of final year undergraduates and first year graduates in applied mathematics. In the reviewer’s opinion, it is very well designed to catch the student’s interest ... while every chapter displays essential features in some important area of fluid dynamics. Additionally, students may practice by solving 91 exercises. This volume is mainly devoted to inviscid flows. ... The book is very well written.' (Denis Serre, Mathematical Reviews, 2004)

This thesis reports on advances in the physics of shock waves at micro scale. Micro shock waves have been a new field in the physics of fluids since the beginning of the 21st century. However, there is still very limited amount of works in this field of study due to technical limitations. Therefore, this thesis focuses on developing novel methods to generate micro shock waves, and then investigates their flow properties. In this work, a laser differential interferometer is mainly applied to perform non-contact measurements of the micro shock flow's trajectory, velocity and density. The results show that in contrast to macroscopic shock waves, shock waves at micro scale have different propagation and attenuation mechanism. Different from other reports using pressure transducers, the current setup for density measurements resolve the whole micro shock flow system for the first time. engl.

Handbook of Shock Waves Three Volume Set Book Review:

The Handbook of Shock Waves contains a comprehensive, structured coverage of research topics related to shock wave phenomena including shock waves in gases, liquids, solids, and space. Shock waves represent an extremely important physical phenomena which appears to be of special practical importance in three major fields: compressible flow (aerodynamics), materials science, and astrophysics. Shock waves comprise a phenomenon that occurs when pressure builds to force a reaction, i.e. sonic boom that occurs when a jet breaks the speed of sound. This Handbook contains experimental, theoretical, and numerical results which never before appeared under one cover; the first handbook of its kind. The Handbook of Shock Waves is intended for researchers and engineers active in shock wave related fields. Additionally, R&D establishments, applied science & research laboratories and scientific and engineering libraries both in universities and government institutions. As well as, undergraduate and graduate students in fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, and physics. Key Features * Ben-Dor is known as one of the founders of the field of shock waves * Covers a broad spectrum of shock wave research topics * Provides a comprehensive description of various shock wave related subjects * First handbook ever to include under one separate cover: experimental, theoretical, and numerical results

Mathematical Analysis of Shock Wave Reflection Book Review:

This book is aimed to make careful analysis to various mathematical problems derived from shock reflection by using the theory of partial differential equations. The occurrence, propagation and reflection of shock waves are important phenomena in fluid dynamics. Comparing the plenty of studies of physical experiments and numerical simulations on this subject, this book makes main efforts to develop the related theory of mathematical analysis, which is rather incomplete so far. The book first introduces some basic knowledge on the system of compressible flow and shock waves, then presents the concept of shock polar and its properties, particularly the properties of the shock polar for potential flow equation, which are first systematically presented and proved in this book. Mathematical analysis of regular reflection and Mach reflection in steady and unsteady flow are the most essential parts of this book. To give challenges in future research, some long-standing open problems are listed in the end. This book is attractive to researchers in the fields of partial differential equations, system of conservation laws, fluid dynamics, and shock theory.

Foundations and Applications of Mechanics Fluid mechanics Book Review:

Foundations and Applications of Mechanics: Volume II, Fluid Mechanics shows how suitable approximations such as ideal fluid flow model, boundary layer methods, and the acoustic approximation, can help solve problems of practical importance. The author proceeds from the general to the particular, making it clear at each stage what assumptions have been made to obtain a particular approximation. In his discussion of compressible fluids, Jog steers away from using gas tables and emphasizes obtaining solutions by numerical techniques - an approach more amenable to computer solutions. He discusses the control volume and the differential equation forms of governing equations in detail and uses examples to demonstrate the advantages and shortcomings of each approach.
